The burn failed because of a medium write error.
iDVD won’t burn to my DVD player for some reason. So, I made a disk image, and am trying to now use disc utility to burn that.
I am getting the following error. I am using Apple branded DVD-Rs (yes, I still have some, bought a large amount of them in 2007). I have also tried TDK, Maxell, Verbatim and Sony media. I have cleaned the lens in my DVD player. The DVD mechanism plays movies just fine, and mounts disks bought commercially as movies, and burned on my PC.
I can burn to CD-R, but not to DVD-R. I can burn to CD out of itunes, but I can’t burn to DVD out of iDVD, or with disk utility.
I get this message:
«The attempt to burn disc failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error.»

I have also tried TDK, Maxell, Verbatim and Sony media
Me too. Out of that list the only brand that has NEVER produced a coaster (on the same burner as yours) is Verbatim DVD-R and Fuji DVD-R. All the others produced a 25-50% failure rate.
Have you tried burning at a slower speed?
Using 16x DVD media is fine — in fact it is difficult to buy any other — but there is a consensus in the Apple Support Forums that a slower burn is a better burn i.e. 2x or 4x (slow burns are better burns!). I always use Toast for burning.
The term «Best» means the fastest speed that the drive told Toast it can write to a specific disc. The drive’s firmware and info on the disc decide what speed burns are available. When you press the speed setting button in Toast (after inserting a disc) you’ll likely see some speeds in italics and some in bold face. The ones in bold face are supported by that media on that drive. The fastest one is what Toast calls Best.
Audio CDs in particular should be burned at the lowest supported speed.
Verification is a good indicator the disc is burned okay. However, other DVD players can still have problems with the disc. Media problems with various drives is not uncommon. Slower burning may reduce the chance of those problems, and is one of the reasons why RW (read/write) media is always rated slower than DVD-R.
There are some interesting facts here:
But many will tell you that the ‘slower burn is best’ theory is outdated. Who really knows? At the end of the day, if your home-made DVD was verified by Toast and will play anywhere on anybody’s DVD player, then that is the result we are all after!

MEDIUM: WRITE ERROR
Happened to me twice now when burnin a movie, this time it happened round about 94% complete, other time about 83%
Media: Bulkpaq Green 2x
Burner: Pioneer 104 (latest firmware)
Software: Pinnacle Instant Copy
It had problem writing to your disk. Have you tried a different brand?
Since it got that far into the burn, I would hazard a guess the optical block lost it’s position on the disc.
DVD-R uses a wobble on a pre-groove cut into the disc to know where it is on the media and to track / focus on when burning. If it’s lost that half way through the burn then that would probably give you that sort of problem.
Bulkpaq do seem to have a few issues with their media as far as «universal» compatibility goes. Some people like them, but you often hear about problems with them. If their stamper is up the creek — and the last I heard they were using Princo media with the fake TDK codes on some of their range so God only knows where THAT came from — then chances are the whole batch will be useless.
Try sending them back for exchange / refund. I don’t recommend anyone uses Bulkpaq until they know what they’re doing, because they cause so many problems it’s hard to track down the problem if you’re new to the game.

I find my Mac always gives an error when using 24x write speed. If I drop it down to the 4x write speed, works fine without any errors.
I’ve wasted a few CD’s along the way of writing at full speed.

I have the wonderful spindle of solid color Memorex CD-R’s. iTunes did give me some grief when trying to burn an Audio CD as well. It doesn’t seem to happen anymore for me though. I suggest trying a different brand of media.
I don’t see any need to get Apple branded discs. Try burning a data disc as well.

speed is one of the factors related to this problem. I’ve had this before trying to burn some Ubuntu CD images onto CDs. very frustrating. It shouldnt matter what speed rating the CDs are either. as long as you’re not burning over the rated speed it should be fine (burning faster than rated with a good quality drive works too). 24x is the drive’s maximum speed, but the setting «Maximum possible» probably assesses the quality of the CD before burning and adjusts accordingly hence problem messages like failure to calibrate laser, etc.
Even though the media is rated for 52x, you should be able to burn at 24x with no problems. Its the drive’s problem.
try to burn 4x for best burning quality, and then verify the data afterwards.
but in all seriousness, MBP drives (LG and Panasonic) are crap to begin with. probably because of such a thin design.

Medium write error. at any speed!
I have a Sawtooth (June, 2000 orig. 500mhz), upgraded to 1 gb dual, running Leopard. I can’t burn a disc with iTunes or finder or disc utility. DVDs work fine, but not CDs. HELP! I did max speed, 24, 16, 12, and even 4. My DVD burner is fairly new, Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D.
Thanks.

Medium Write Error
I’ve been using the same big spindle of Memorex 52x CD-Rs for over a year and never had a problem burning audio CDs from iTunes on my MacBook. Now suddenly today I keep getting «medium write errors.» I followed the advice on this thread and set the burn speed to 24x. That worked—once. Then I tried burning another audio CD at 24x (same settings, same everything), and got another «medium write error.» The only way I was able to burn that second CD was as a data CD. What’s the deal?

This Method Works!
I find my Mac always gives an error when using 24x write speed. If I drop it down to the 4x write speed, works fine without any errors.
I’ve wasted a few CD’s along the way of writing at full speed.
I just want to second this user: I was having trouble with different CD brands, even Apple customer service wasn’t sure what was wrong. But when I took this advice and went to Preferences in iTunes, then Advanced>Burning, and dropped the write speed down to around 4x, the CD burned perfectly. Granted, it’s a lot slower, but it works.
Thanks so much for the help!

This is late, but I thought I’d post this here in hopes that it helps someone else.
I had been getting the dreaded medium write error for some time. I tried an external drive (an old one, not entirely reliable) and got the same thing. I thought for some reason it might be software related, so I restored my computer (a bit extreme, and an unlikely solution but I needed to do it anyways, so why not?). That didn’t fix it. I did the PRAM reset (which would have no bearing on this anyways, but again why not?). I was about to give up and chalk it up to a faulty drive and bring it to apple to fix under my apple care.
As I was going to leave, I had one more idea. I went to work (I work at Best Buy) and picked up a CD laser lens cleaner disc. My MBP wouldn’t load the disc, but when you put it in, the disc spins and tries to load, running the brushes over the laser.
A few times through that and my computer is working like a champ.
So before you try all that other crap, go out and spend the 10 bucks for the lens cleaner. : )

i can’t believe it!
had the same problem, found this on another forum and it worked like a charm. who knows why.
I cannot believe it, but this crazy fix (on a 24″ Core 2 Duo iMac) worked for me:
Open System Preferences.
Click on «International»
Under «Languages»: Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set «Order for sorted lists» to English
Set «Word Break» to English (United States, computer)
Close System Preferences
Restart computer
Incredible! It works! This is now at the top of my list for unbelievably arcane fixes.

Thanks for writing about the write speed! I just wasted 4 CDs trying to burn some ISOs, and only after reducing the write speed of Disk Utility from 24x to 10x did it work. Appreciate it!

Medium write error?
I too is having this problem now. I used the be able to burn CD’s w/ Memorex Music CD-R 40x 700mb 80 mins, about 6 months ago & now I decided to start burning more CD’s and can’t do it I keep getting Medium write error or it goes thru the cycle that it looks like the disc is being burned, but when I try playing it on a external player I have nothing. I put the disc back into my Imac G5 and I get you have put in a blank disc. I have read on some forums it’s because of iTunes updated to iTunes 8 iTunes 7.7 was a better format is this true ?
Someone please help

Try this. Worked for me.
Props to danny.merrill (4 posts above this one) for the fantastic idea
of trying a lens cleaner disc.
I’ve browsed the web and read several forums on this topic. I avoided
this problem as much as possible because I don’t burn DVDs terribly
often. I could afford to try out many things, one at a time,
over an extended period of time. I have sacrificed a couple dozen
DVDs in the process, just like many others.
My problem is similar to eveyone else’s except that I can easily burn
audio CDs in iTunes, yet I am unable to burn DVDs in Disk Utility or
Toast.
These things have NOT worked for me so far:
— reducing burn speed for DVDs
— saving as images first, then burning DVDs
— deleting the com.apple.finder.plist file
— resetting PRAM and NVRAM (worked only for 1 or two DVDs)
— chaning disc brands («no-name,» memorex, verbatim, sony. I
thought it worked at first, but only was successful with a few DVDs from
Sony. then I ran into the same problems)
— closing all other programs except Toast/Disc Utility to
conserve memory
The ONLY thing that has worked for me thus far:
— cleaning the lens with a CD lens cleaner
Therefore, I recommend that you spend a few dollars to buy one of these
«special» CDs with a soft little brush that cleans off the lens. I
have burned several different DVDs and CDs over the past few days
successfully.
Please reply to let others know if this works for you!
DVD-R burning fails — «medium write error»

i was wondering if anyone had any idea’s what was goign on.. all of a sudden a little while ago (after some apple update, don’t remember which tbo) i cannot burn any media, well, 98% of the time.. It starts up and then instnaly goes to finishing burn, and spits it out with a «fail burn because of a medium write error». This happens with 2 brans of media i have, both of which worked flawlessly before, and popcorn, toast as well as trying disc utility. I was wondering if ANYONE has any ideas what can be causing this — i need to burn dvds for work and so on, but can no longer.
Any help woudl be greatly appriciated.
Oh, forgot, it burns once every 20 tries or so. ist redicilous!

I was up unitl 4am last night trying to deal with this problem, and no one seems to have the answers. I’m dealing with it in Toast 9 (tried 8 too), and it’s apparently been around for evar.
Some say it’s faulty media. Most say «your discs are too cheap, go get some memorex», and the rest say «It’s because you’re using memorex, go get something else».
Some one else suggested that it’s a pref. problem in toast, and to delete all .plist files with toast and roxio in them, then delete the apple.finder pref list. It apparently worked for the poster, but not for me.
It’s not updates. My drive can do it.
Stumped. Pissed. Time for Brainsturm!

I ended up having to replace my Superdrive when this happened to me. First it stopped burning DVD DLs, and then it stopped burning regular DVD-Rs. A lot of people seem to run into problems with the Matshita drives in these computers. I replaced mine with a Superdrive made by Hitachi.
This was a Macbook Pro, by the way.

I had the same issue but it was only with Verbatim DVD-R’s. It burned DVD DL’s and CD’s fine.
I took it to the Apple store because I was convinced it was a bad optical drive. The lady blew some compressed air into the drive and what do you know, it burns Verbatim DVD-R’s perfect now (and I’ve burned a good 20-30 since then which was about 5 months ago).
I never put a disc into my MBP unless it’s perfectly clean and I keep the computer itself extremely clean. It’s just weird that it was burning everything fine but my Verbatim DVD-R’s but after she cleaned it out with compressed air it works flawlessly now. *shrug*

Thanks for the advice. Not that I have an Applestore in my backwater, but I might try bring it into it’s equivalent. As for replacing my optical — might give that a try too. Humph. Effort. About to try it on a different MBW — will be back.

So I just tried burning a Verbatim DVD-R with some data files and received this error again.
Tried three difference discs and even restarted the computer. Same error. I figured what the hell, might as well try what the lady did at the Apple store. So I got a can of compressed air and fed my optical drive some air (about half strength or half squeeze on the trigger) from left to right. Insert same DVD-R that was giving me issues and I’m trying to burn the same files/burn folder. Lo and behold, it works.
Amazing how these Apple computers work.

Clean your drives!
Guys, there’s another forum on this:
And the moral of the story is . try to clean your drives. Maybe it will work. It worked for me. Was burning lots of coasters yesterday, read the forums, bought a $10.95 Staples brand CD/DVD drive cleaner, ran it twice, and now no problems burning (with my MacBook Pro purchased summer 2007, factory-installed SuperDrive).
Hope this helps .

and some times it is because of some VERY SPECIFIC preference files sitting on your computer that Apple considers no-no’s. I will not tell you what they are but I’ll give you some hints: do you ever torrent? Have you ever DL’ed software you do not own and added serials you found on the web?
I actually think all this talk about having specific types of DVD’s (Verbatim) is so much hot-air. What the heck, does Apple have some sort of deal with Verbatim, or something?

You are so hilariously ignorant that my sides are aching. First of all, your claim about torrents and things like that is utter BS and completely unsubstantiated. On a side note, bittorrent is not illegal, and neither are bittorrent clients. It’s just a protocol for transmitting data. For example, Blizzard uses bittorrent to distribute updates for World of Warcraft.
Second, recordable media (both CD and DVD) is not all created equal. Even certain brands use different factories to source their discs, so one day your Verbatim discs may be one brand, and the next batch may be completely different. The only way to tell is by looking at the discs media code. I only know of a way to do this in Windows, but there are probably utilities for Macs as well.
Take a look at this guide for information on different types of media and why some give errors when burning (pay special attention to the section labeled «Dye types and disc reflectivity»). For more information, check out the other media guides.
For example, I’m looking at a spindle of TDK branded discs, however the media code tells me this disc was made by CMC Magnetics (these discs are not very good quality).
Discs branded «TDK» may be manufactured by any of the following companies:
- TDK
- CMC
- Moser Baer
- Philips
- Taiyo Yuden
- Ritek
- Ricoh
- Maxell
It’s mostly a lottery

I have the answer to this problem, and it is not DVD quality, or dust. I never said torrenting was illegal, even though most use it to DL copyrighted material. It is an issue with certain preference files. I have fixed the issue on my own machine after I foolishly downloaded and tried a couple of «things» from the torrent community that maybe I should not have done.
I will even give you a hint, the one preference file I found to be the main bad-guy is from an app starts with an «i» (no, it is not an Apple app)
IT IS PREFERENCE FILES, PEOPLE! There is your answer. I bet anyone who does a total fresh, clean re-install of the OS, without all the preference files you have accumulated from «you know where» will fix your issue!
